Fans from across the globe gathered for the Mateus Souza Testimonial on a sunny Tuesday night in Ryparken. The friendly organised to say goodbye to one of the longest serving members of the squad, the Brazilian wonderkid Mateus Souza, who will complete a transfer to FC Porto on 1st September for an undisclosed sum. Celtic boosted by new recruits had a strong squad to choose from, and didn't take long to prove their worth.
Who better to open the scoring than the man of the hour, Souza broke free of the defence and cooly slotted it past the keeper into the bottom right hand corner. Ryparken struck back quickly with a cheeky rounding of debutant Turkish goalkeeper Deyvi Halfon. Not to deterred, Deyvi proved to be a Turkish delight pulling off some incredible cat-like saves as Ryparken's star right winger threatened the Celtic defence.
The lead was restored courtesy of big John Walsh, a cool slotted shot in off the right post, meant Celtic not only controlled the game, but the scoreline too heading into half-time. The second half started with a scrappy goal for Ryparken, just beating Deyvi in the bottom left hand corner after a cross from right wing. 2-2, with 30 minutes to go.
The Celtic team really dug deep and powered forward creating a string of chances. A goal kick for Ryparken was quickly pressed by the Celtic forward line, Issac JJ getting a tackle in to prevent a pass, which fell to the feet of Dan Vandeputte, and the Belgian striker did not disappoint. One look up and the ball was curved into the top corner with a strike that nearly broke the back of the net.
Heading into the final minutes, Ryparken sent everyone forward desparately looking for a late equaliser. former Finnish Premier League defender Timo Priha got a head to a corner and cleared it, before the Celtic attack broke free. Outnumbered and out of gas, the Ryparken defence gave too much space for Vandeputte to make it a double. A run past the last defender and another rocket sent around the keeper and in off the right hand post. 4-2 and the final whistle blew immediately after.
The Celtic's are in fine form ahead of the season opener on 31st of August, and big things are expected this season based on tonight's performance.
